The Nine Peaks of Virtue
Virtues give our lives meaning and fulfillment. They are powerful skills that when cultivated create positive feelings that resonate and empower others. In this painting, the lofty mountains of Oregon are used to symbolize the levels of courage, joy and peace we aspire in our daily choices:
*Mt. Washington (7,794 ft.) represents humor, a quality that makes it easier to accept life and brings people to a common ground (the smiling young woman).
*Broken Top (9,177 ft.) represents forgiveness, a process that places our attention on other things in life instead of dwelling on anger or resentment. (man consoling woman).
*Mt. Bachelor (9,068 ft.) represents perseverance, overcoming obstacles and diligently moving in the direction of one’s goals (the rock climber).
*South Sister (10,358 ft.) represents generosity, an awareness of our own freedom from smallness of mind or character; to give without restraint (figure offering fruit).
*Middle Sister (10,047 ft.) represents acceptance, embracing the diversity of others and their right to their own feelings and opinions (the two children emphasize the importance of laying an early foundation of racial fairness as prejudice is learned over time).
*North Sister (10,085 ft.) represents compassion, a heartfelt trait that shows sympathetic concern for the misfortunes of others that often motivates a desire to help (one woman consoling another).
*Mt. Jefferson (10,497 ft.) represents gratitude, an attitude of thanks that encompasses positive feelings of appreciation for the goodness we see in our lives (figure with outstretched arms).
*Mt. Hood (11,245 ft.) represents perspective, the ability to look at life from all angles, recognizing the bigger picture; a virtue of wisdom (figure with the binoculars).
*Three Fingered Jack (7.844 ft.) represents humility, freedom from arrogance, accepting our own strengths and limitations without defensiveness; open to new ideas and advice while placing a high value on more meaningful things that benefit others (seated woman with head bowed).
Like the magnificent mountains that encircle the globe, these nine virtues are only a portion of the numerous beautiful characteristics that compose a life of integrity.
(The original painting is from the private collection of Robin Lewis Galloway of Terrebonne, Oregon.)
