Man's Only Enemy
"Man's Only Enemy" is an enslaved mind. A blindfolded traveler hesitates to proceed through the undulant landscape of fear, doubt, and worry. Dominating the middle of the landscape, a demon stands guard with outstretched arms. It has no eyes and no ears, is unwilling and unable to expand knowledge, and discourages change. The hills suggest the ups and downs of a searching individual. A stranded sailboat catches full wind in a futile effort to move forward. It cannot progress, and it stands as a symbol of wasted energy, false knowledge, and misplacement. A variety of paths lead to the city of wisdom which harbors the secret of life - man is composed of a substance which can neither be created nor destroyed and is part of an infinite universe.
(The original painting is from the private collection of Sharon McComb of San Francisco, California.)
