In this painting, life without knowledge of spiritual truth is symbolized by darkness. If we grope our way through a dark room filled with obstacles, our progress will be slow and result in many bruises. The rose in the left corner of the picture represents youth and beauty. It can survive in faint light, but its leaves will be small and its blossoms few. The poppy beside it signifies death. In the game of chess, the king is the most important piece, but alone on a chess board, it is a meaningless figure. Even if we enlarge it, forge it from gold and decorate it with precious gems - spend a fortune on its appearance - we would still have a meaningless figure on the chess board of life. Restored, however, to its original form and placed in the light as one of many figures in the game, the king again becomes the key piece with over 18 trillion possible moves at its command! Enlightening power lines are displayed in the arched window.
