Just as there are social classes in the material world, there are different levels of spiritual progress. All planes are connected, offering the ever present opportunity to rise or fall. The lowest level is inhabited by people who were misled, unaware of the great truth that life is continuous and that one reaps what one has sown. On this plane are murderers, and those who enjoy hurting others. The next level contains those who prey on others for material gain, such as thieves, those involved in the negative use of science and art, in war, pornography, adultery, drugs, and laziness. The majority of people are found on the middle plane, neither harming nor helping others. These souls are busy working to pay for houses and cars, while waiting for their next vacation. The fourth plane consists of those who love to help others. These enlightened persons give of themselves to assist those who are needy or misguided. On the highest plane dwell the most evolved of humanity. Their concern is the welfare of all, and they are willing to sacrifice even their own lives for this goal.
The lightning and thunder symbolize karma, the law of action and reaction. The less one is developed spiritually, the less they will recognize the connection between these two halves of the karmic law. When a soul ignores the truth of life too long, it can fall into a spiritual wasteland, into a level of complete dependence on others, like a turtle lying on its back.
