Teach Your Children Well

Being a parent never ends; it simply evolves.  Raising a child today looks very different from it did in the past, shaped by technology, heightened parental involvement, a stronger focus on safety, and shifting family dynamics. Traditional gender roles have loosened, giving way to a greater emphasis on individuality for both children and parents. These changes have fostered creativity, problem-solving, and resilience for everyone involved.

Technology now plays a massive role in childhood, with many kids spending countless hours on screens. In contrast, past generations often played unsupervised, inventing their own games, rules, and ways to resolve conflicts. While today’s parents are more engaged and hands-on, it’s important not to smooth every path. Providing opportunities while still allowing children to face challenges helps them build coping skills, independence, and confidence. Navigating peer pressure and forming identity both rely on critical thinking, something developed through free exploration and self-discovery, without rigid labels.

So how do you balance freedom with boundaries? Children feel valued and needed when given meaningful roles within the family, such as simple chores or responsibilities. Setting clear, consistent rules helps them feel secure. They also learn by watching: how parents communicate, handle emotions, and treat others. Model courage, kindness, and respect- for elders, community helpers, friends, pets, and even personal belongings. Praise their efforts and persistence, and help them view failure as part of growth.

Above all, listen. Listening tells a child they matter. When they feel heard, they feel safe. As they practice these lessons- empathy, courage, curiosity, and respect- they begin to see how their presence sends ripples far beyond what they can see.  It’s something we all need to remember.
